For me, photography has always been about sharing an emotion, sharing a moment in time, as if you are having a conversation with the subject. I'm reminded of some of the greatest photographs in history, where simply by viewing the image the viewer is transported to that moment or place in time. With this in mind, when you are photographing a subject never be afraid to get in the middle of the action. Your images will be transformed from the usual comment of "That's a nice picture", to "Wow, how did you get that!"
Now, I'm not recommending that you run in to traffic or anything of that nature. Don't get yourself killed is what I'm saying. Next time your taking that photo of a loved one don't be afraid to take a few steps closer, in fact get right in there. Your photos will benefit greatly. Here are some examples:
